(page 8) Slovenia - definitely the most pleasant surprise of our trip. We knew nothing about Slovenia before coming, but it was so gorgeous and charming, we left feeling like it was one of the most special places we'd ever been. On this page, Lake Bled.

The Church of the Assumption sits on the only island in Slovenia, in the middle of Lake Bled. In the background are the Julian Alps.

Slovenia's oldest castle, Bled Castle, perched at the top of a steep cliff above Lake Bled. It was first mentioned in writing in 1101 when the German emperor Henrik II gave it to the Bishops of Brixen. On the right is another view of the castle taken right outside our hotel. For Jason, the castle is just a nice backdrop to the real jewel in the picture, the casino sign.

Entering the castle gates.

A view of the turet.

Brane giving us an overview of the castle.

A view of the lake from the castle.

A camera crew was shooting a video for a German folk song while we were there.

This is for the guys at FOX and their obsession with German folk music and Oktoberfest.

The neatest feature at Bled Castle was a souvenir made by traditional printing methods. We had "The Colberts" printed on paper with a picture of the castle. Here he is arranging the tiles and inking them.

Placing the paper onto the tiles. Pushing it in to the press.

Here I am trying to turn the handle that does the pressing - it was tough!! He's melting wax...

...and adding his seal! Here's the finished product.

Next, we visited the Church of the Assumption. The only way to reach the island was via rowboat.

The back steps of the church on the left, and the 99 steps in the front (right).

Trying (and buying) some of the Blueberry, Plum and Honey brandy.
