Croatia, Slovenia & Montenegro

(page 3) Croatia has 1,185 islands, only 48 of which are inhabited. We decided to spend a day on the beautiful island of Mljet. This is purportedly the island Homer wrote about in The Odyssey, where Odysseus holed up with Calypso.

The ferry that brought us to Mljet.

Yep, welcome to our ride.

We decided to rent a car to explore the island. It was such a beautiful day, Jason wanted a car without a top, which sounded like a good idea. When we got to the only car rental company on the island and saw the cars, my only request was "anything but the leopard-covered car" (which I said three times).

There were only two topless car options available, and the first car we were shown didn't start. We got stuck with what we fondly named "The Rat", a car complete with whiskers and a tail. It wasn't enough that the car was old and fuzzy; the best part was it was so loud, we announced our arrival way before we were seen. We got a lot of chuckles and friendly waves.

We drove to the west side of the island and entered the Mljet National Park.

We stopped at the only hotel on the island and got the only remaining table on the veranda. Turns out we stumbled on the turning point for a triathlon and got to watch cyclists come in and begin the running leg of the journey.

This got old after about 10 minutes so we decided to hop into "The Rat" to do more exploring.

We came upon a beautiful spot on the east side of the island. Just to the right of this picture, we saw camera crews and some sort of obstacle course in the water. The crew wasn't happy with us being there so we walked away and when we did, we noticed several cars with the Survivor logo.

We spotted a small restaurant on a cliff overlooking the water and stopped for some delicious fish stew and a salad.

Jason followed a short trail and got a great view of the sea and of them shooting the very first official season of "Survivor: Croatia". Kinda cool!

The restaurant is family-owned and called Stermasi. The son offered us a free shot of homemade "grappa". Jason described it as very strong and herbal.

The beautiful Adriatic Sea.
